#28daysofyin Day 21 : Earth-energy awaits you

#28daysofyin Big mama love! That’s the Earth energy expressed - this energy creates a safe, secure and loving environment - just like our Earth Mama has for us, protecting us from the darkness and scariness of open Space with this cushy little planet for us to call home. This is the energy of selfless action and unconditional love. The Earth element is nurturing and seeks to draw all things toward itself in order to bring harmony and stability. Earth energy is worry-energy though, too, like a fussy mama hen. And this concern for others, this sympathy, this nurturing spirit, this outward pouring of attention and love can easily be taken advantage of, and even drain us (Earth people have a problem with boundaries!). Earth is a balance of both yin and yang, the feminine and masculine together. It's inward energy, grounded and centered. In Chinese philosophy Earth is associated with the qualities of patience, thoughtfulness, practicality and responsibility, hard work and ambition and stability. Out of balance, Earth element can represent selfishness and self-centeredness. Earth type people are usually warm, kind and supportive. They can be overprotective and tend to merge with their environment (boundaries!) - they forget themselves, and can get a little needy. The organs for Earth are the Stomach and Spleen, and it’s their job to nourish every Organ and element - after all, every living thing arises from the Earth. The Stomach’s damp and the Spleen’s dry create harmony in the body, allowing Food Qi to move to the Lungs and to be mixed with Cosmic Qi. Interestingly, they both tend to fall out of balance easily and need each other to maintain their ideal state. We’re moving into Earth time soon, it’s a late summer energy, and it’s all about the harvest - how we reap what we have sown in the seasons past. Hard work, the maintenance of the soil, the garden, pays off and we’re nourished by what we receive - ain’t that satisfying? You know that satisfaction of a good days work? That’s the Earth Element in balance. Fertility and pregnancy are manifestations of Earth element, and the Spleen feeds the placenta. When we suck at our mama’s breast, our own Earth

Element is awakened. We feel secure, content, we accept life and ourselves. Spiritually Earth is associated with intent, memory and thought (like the memories we store of our mothers, deep in the subconscious, of feelings, smells, touch…). This is known as yi and it’s the centre of the functions of thought and intellectual activity - when our yi is not well-developed, we can spend our whole life searching for comfort, acceptance and reassurance that everything is all right. Yi is also our immune system’s memory (Spleen is immune system). Yi is also intent, our altruistic nature, our ability to commit to a life of service (living our svadharma, our purpose) which can actually enhance our immune function (according to an American study). A good reason to volunteer! We’re hitting our Stomach and Spleen meridians with this nice front-body stretch (also a backbend, see Kidney meridian for that info). To access this pose, lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat to the floor. Get a block, a book, a bolster, whatever you have that’s firm and high enough to be comfortable, and lift your hips to slide it under your sacrum (notice how my lower back is OFF the block, sacrum is closer to your tailbone, between your hip bones). Rest your sacrum on the support, and slowly extend your legs. You can stay here, raise yourself up higher for more stretch and even take your arms overhead. Relax. Try to melt into the block and the floor. And feel all the good stuff Earth energy brings to your life…mmm, nourishment! Stay for 5 mins. Enjoy! #spleen #stomach #meridians #earth #yoga #yinyoga #yogaforall #tcm #taoism
