#28daysofyin Day 19 - Let’s Love the Couple (Liver ‘n’ Gallbladder)

#28daysofyin and today we consider the Wood element - that is, the Liver and Gall Bladder meridians. Wood is the element of determination, the energy that drives forth the new growth of Spring. The seeds of change that we planted within ourselves push through with new energy and a sense of renewal gives us the vision and inspiration to realise our goals and express our creative energy. This is the birth of yang energy. Yang energy is forceful and vigorous, warming and expansive; an activating energy that overcomes inertia and breaks through barriers. This growth is not random though, it is purposeful and can adapt if necessary, ensuring survival. When we become rigid, our Wood energy out of balance, we lose our adaptability and our ability to thrive. The Wood energy out of balance is controlling, frustrated, angry, combative. The Gall Bladder and Liver are associated with the muscular system, tendons and ligaments that are needed for movement and activity. The meridian of the Gall Bladder running down our side body sets our boundaries in space - that is, our personal space - and when in balance, our Wood energy keeps us focused and not easily swayed. In Taoism the deeper energetic basis of this element is the hun, the ‘heavenly soul,’ that allows us to dream, see the future, elevate above restrictions and clarity goals. The hun rises from the Liver during sleep to land at the eyes, creating dreams, and when we awake, it powers the manifestation of our dreams. It allows us to recognise what the yogis call our svadharma - our personal purpose - and go forth with purpose into the world. >>>

The Wood energy can transform anger into insight (when we notice what makes us angry and why, Wood can help us stay in control and understand the message, it can motivate us to evolve) and frustration into patience (the Wood energy can help us to accept what we cannot control, to be less judgemental and more adaptable). Wood has a lot to do with our family relationships too…frustration and irritability are a typical sign of Wood energy out of balance. This is the energy of flexibility - and inflexibility! In an ideal world, the Wood energy is embodied by the young sapling, growing with hope and persistence towards the canopy. Maintaining physical flexibility is critical for the Wood energy, so we’re doing a yummy hip opener, Square pose, today. To get into it, sit with legs out in front of you. Bend your left knee and bring your left shin so it’s parallel with the front line of your hips. Take your right leg, bend it and stack it on top (shins on top of shins). You can place your right foot anywhere along the left shin or knee; make sure there is no discomfort at either knee joint. Fold forward and hang out here for 5 mins, then change sides. You might want a block or a few stacked books under your forehead or under your elbows. If you can’t access Square, simply take Sukhasana (crossed-legs), and fold forward for 5 mins, then change which shin is in front, fold forward again for 5 mins. Same same but different. Enjoy! #squarepose #sukhasana #yinyoga#yoga #stretch #hips #hipopener#hipstretch #yogaforall #woodelement#fiveelements #tcm
