The LIVER! #28daysofyin You’ve been waiting for it, haven’t you yogis? I love Liver poses, they’re always so deep and juicy. Sincere apologies to my 9:30 AM Yin class today, who had to do this pose TWICE on each side. There were a few groans and sighs. ;) The Liver is our Wood-energy yin organ friend, and it concludes our first journey through the Mother-Child Yin organs (we’ll look at their partner organs and their meridians starting tomorrow with the Small Intestine). The liver is the ‘General’ of the body (think operations manager) and like an military general, it reports to the ‘Prime Minister’ organ, the Lungs, about the state of the blood and the Qi in the body. The Liver relies on the Lung qi to regulate Blood, and the Lungs rely on the Liver Qi to move Qi around the body. The Liver regulates Blood in the body, so relies on healthy Kidney Qi…are we seeing how interrelated everything is here? Anyway, I could bang on all night, but what’s cool about the Liver is what a workhorse it is in the body - it filters, detoxifies, nourishes, replenishes AND stores blood, stores glycogen to boost our energy, recombines all the amino acids from the foods we eat to make proteins AND when it’s not doing all that it makes Gall Bladder juice (aka bile). The Liver is an overachiever. So it REALLY needs US to relax for is. The Liver controls our muscles and tendons - if we’re tense physically, look at the liver. If you can’t relax, feel fatigued and/or tense, look at the liver. Anything going on with the eyes? Liver! The liver governs our growth and development, planning and strategy, drive and ambition, our creativity (think big tree energy - seed to forest friend). Block the liver Qi and we get frustrated or jealous, or even feel rage and/or anger. In Half Happy Baby pose today, try and tune into the positive elements of the Liver - kindness and compassion, generosity. We’re looking at the branch of the Liver meridian that runs from the inner knee to the inner thigh and groin today. I got needled in Liver 7 on the inside of the knee the other day, and DAMN! It was a potent point. This is strong juju. We’re also awakening the Heart and Lungs (and other arm meridians) @migumbo yep, does that too!

Tune into, as well, the upward moving energy of the Liver meridian (the Wood element) - this relates very much to Western physiology, when we look at veins in the GI tract, which pretty much all flow up into the liver via the Hepatic Portal vein and then ‘up’ into the Vena Cava. Take that, gravity! To access happy baby pose, which is kind of like an upside-down lunge, is pretty simple to get into. Lie down on your back, hug your right knee into your chest and then slide your right hand inside your right knee, taking a hold of the foot. I like to go over my inner arch, some prefer to hold the outer foot, you may prefer to loop a towel or a strap over your foot and hold on to that. If your hands suffer, wrap a strap or scarf around your wrists or forearms and voila! Happy fingers! Let the bent right knee fall to the outside of your right ribs, towards the floor. You can use a bit of arm strength, but be gentle! If you’re feeling the pelvis tilt too far or the top of the left leg is complaining, bend the left knee, and place the left foot on the floor. If you’re feeling REALLY tight, pop your left foot on the wall or couch, to support yourself further. If you’re @pariahyoga, just do Yoga Nidrasana. :P Breathe, relax, enjoy. Sleep tight, yogis.
