#28daysofyin Day 6 : Making a Healthy Intestine
Oh small intestines, I've rubbed a few of them today! Ha! Sorry for the late post guys, been busy running bellies (I practice chi ne tsang for the curious!). Today in #28daysofyin we meet our bellies via our arms in this yummy fold, using garudasana arms to get into the beach of this meridian that runs along the back of the shoulder and back of the arms (think stress = tight shoulders and you're tuning into the small intestine out of whack!). This rad organ collects the food that's been chewed by the mouth and mushed around by the stomach and it turns this goo into pure and impure elements. The pure we absorb as nutrition, the impure is moved down to our large intestine to be moved out of the body. The SI is paired with the Heart (see Day 1) and reflects our clarity and our judgement - this is the first part of the body to be affected by stress and the energy of the SI meridian affects the pituitary gland - aka your hormone head gland. Very important for our overall health. We get stressed, we prioritise survival over all the good stuff like digestion and assimilation, healing and repair, and sex hormones. The body can't tell the difference between stressors (that is, tiger vs exam) - it treats everything as life and death. This is why we cultivate a balanced mind, a discerning mind, and a steady breath in yoga + meditation, in order that we can regulate our REACTIONS and turn them into considered RESPONSES, keep our bodies chill so they're not freaking out about imaginary tigers. The ability to do this, to distinguish relevant issues with clarity before making a decision, that is your Small Intestine. Thanks buddy! To get into this one, start standing near a white wall with a nice piece of art. Haha. Seriously, feet a bit wider than hip-width so you feel balanced, wrap your right upper arm under your left upper arm, if you can. You can either just hang forward from there, or take the bind like I am, wrapping the forearms and taking the palms together-ish. Don't torture yourself, just find a nice back of the arms stretch and hang there with your friend gravity for 3 mins on each side. And love your belly.
