#28daysofyin Day 22 - Lu-Lu-Land (Lungs-Lungs and Large Intestine)

#28daysofyin Lungs lungs lungs. And Large Intestines. That's our friend the Metal Element expressed in the body. Metal is slippery like mercury, and hard like steel, and it arises from the Earth. It has the quality of contraction, like cold metal shrinking. The contraction of the lungs lets the breath exhale the body, and the contraction of the large intestine allows us to...well..poop! These organs are part of our 'armour' as they interact with the outside world so much (think about it, the insides of our lungs and our intestines are pretty much just the same as our outsides - we’re basically a series of tubes). Metal is all about alchemy and transformation…the magical ability of the Metal energy is to extract and create value from life. Life is aways changing and we must be willing to work with its natural flow. Metal is the most malleable substance because it can be transformed and re-transformed many times over without ever losing its integrity. The Lungs alchemically transform Qi from the air (Heavenly Qi) into Qi for the body (True Human Qi or Post-Natal Qi, with the help of the Spleen) and the Large Intestines alchemically transform our waste, extracting water and whatever else is of value. Just like the Earth alchemically transforms organic matter into diamonds. The Metal Element is the embodiment of the spiritual Father in the body (known as the p’o). P’o controls cycles, the rhythms of life, creating vitality and aliveness. That ability to live in the world, but not be OF it? That’s p’o. It allows us to dwell as spiritual beings in a physical body. When Metal is out of balance we feel grief, loss, disappointment, doubt. But in balance, it brings us self-worth and self-esteem, appreciation and respect, and brings strength and adaptability in the face of stress. The alchemical energy of the Metal Element removes the regrets and disappointments from our psyches, freeing us from this and welcoming us into inspiration and aliveness. Shiny, shiny metal! In grief it allows us to find acceptance. It allows us to release from perfectionism and to simply be. As we are. To let things be. Everything. As it is. >>>

This is one of my favourite lessons from my meditation practice and one I have to relearn EVERY BLOODY DAY (it feels like). Haha. Let it be as it is, kid. I even got it tattooed on my wrist. That’s another story. :P I digress. Hamonious Metal energy has us brimming with a quiet strength and firmness in the face of life’s challenges. We can work hard without needing to be validated. We can find our own morals, our own discipline, our own principles. It’s like being well-parented - we’re held just safe enough to be free to go out into the world and explore without worrying that our mistakes will leave us feeling unloved or unsupported. The season for Metal is Autumn and it’s a beautiful acknowledgement of how the ‘death’ of the earth (falling leaves, decaying fruits and flowers) creates life (with the transformation of organic compounds of which all matter is created). This is the energy of Metal - finding the grace in letting go, finding value in that that seems lifeless. Connecting with the breath every moment reminds us of life, even in the face of death. We can keep our Metal in balance with healthy elimination too, letting go of what we no longer need, both physically and emotionally. This element is feminine because Metal is extracted from the feminine Earth, although Metal is considered less feminine than Earth or Water. Metal people are good with words, very determined and powerful. >>>

Metal types succeed by being less opinionated, accepting change, and gracefully releasing the past. To help our Metal friends (I am Metal!!) we’re doing a nice/challenging pose called Noodle. To get into this one, start with your belly on the ground, then slide your right hand, palm up, underneath your chest, creeping your hand away from your body as much as you can, while keeping your left armpit heavy over your right forearm. If that's a world of pain, stay. No more. Breathe. If you'd like to go deeper, take your left arm on top of your right and creep that left hand away from the body, like tying a knot in a pair of shoelaces. You may need to tuck your toes under and scoot forward. Warning! Achtung! You will need to push your breasts down towards your hips if they're of any kind of size. Relax. Forehead to ground or a block. Breathe some long steady breaths for about 3-5 mins on each side and enjoy. Night loves! x #metalelement #metal #yinyoga #yoga #yogaforall #childpose #twist #noodle #yogastretch #yogalove #yogaeverydamnday #shoulders
