#28daysofyin Day 20- Fire that Ignites You!
#28daysofyin FIRE!! I had acupuncture on this meridian on Monday and have the last of the sha on my inner elbow now…so interesting how the body holds stuff, and how it manifests physically. It’s technically Fire Element time, and it finally feels like it!! :) Fire Element is all about love and joy - you know, how you feel on a hot summer arvo hanging in the backyard or at the beach with your favourite people. Fire allows you to bring all that determination of Wood (a couple of days back) and burn that Wood into hot transformational energy, allowing you to realise your full potential. We have all had times in our lives when we were unable to really follow through with a project to its full potential. If we find ourselves with a million half-finished projects, it’s often that we need to get our fire to burn! This is so relevant, I think, to take a look at. When we aren’t truly honouring our heart’s desires, of COURSE we can’t get stuff done. And this is what I love about TCM - it takes a holistic, systemic approach. Let’s not just label some unfocused or ADHD or whatever - let’s look at them as a whole organism. The Fire Element organs are the Heart and the Small Intestine, but there’s something else magical going on here! Because of the Hearts’ enormous importance to our mental and physical wellbeing, it is the only Organ assigned with ITS OWN ORGAN specifically to protect the Heart; the Pericardium (remember the King’s Bodyguard from a week or so back?). The pericardium works as a kind of doorway to the Heart that opens to allow love in, and closes to protect the Heart from emotional insults or shock. Someone who ‘takes things to heart’ and is impacted from every insult, intentional or unintentional, is likely to have an imbalanced Pericardium. Fire Element imbalances can include tremendous emotional sorrow or a sudden powerful emotional shock. This is how people die of heart attacks when shocked! Fire energy is are FUN! We all have different Elemental tendencies (you can see a Five Elements Acupuncturist for diagnosis, Mark Hoppe in Newcastle is really good); Fire people are great public speakers, warm-hearted, optimistic and >>>
>>> generous, spiritual, friendly, magnetic, charismatic. When Fire goes out of whack, the good becomes, well, less good! Fun-seeking becomes hedonism, charisma becomes seduction. Basically you start to use your powers of good for evil! The Heart ‘houses the mind’ and enfolds the Shen (the Spirit) in Chinese medicine, and is entwined in the emotions of all Five Elements in TCM - it is our life-force manifest. Fire is the most masculine of the five elements. Therefore, it is considered very yang. However, it can exist in either a yang or a yin state because in Taoism all things have both a yin and a yang expression to create balance. (Confused? We’ll talk about yin-yang another time.) Experience the love, compassion, fun, joy, and pleasure of Fire in this yummy pose, Hangman. To enter it, lie on your belly perpendicular to the wall, head a couple of inches from the wall. Slide your arms UP the wall, taking them wider than your shoulders as you start to straighten the elbows. Play with what width feels best for you. Allow your body to relax and your head to rest on or hang toward the floor; you can rest it on a block or rolled towel or book if your neck is unhappy. Five mins breathing into your armpits and your big happy heart! <3
